Vacation Days 5, 8 & 9: Montpellier

30th Montpellier Dance Festival, 2010

I spent Friday, Monday and Tuesday (around my cultural weekend) in the beautiful city of Montpellier - spelled with two Ls in French, unlike my single-Led capital city, Montpelier, Vermont. Montpellier is home to the oldest faculty of medicine in France, which, since the Middle Ages, has been the home to many firsts in the world of medical studies.

As for the poster, Montpellier is also home to a major dance festival which takes place every June and draws artists from around the world.

On Monday, my assistant friend, Liz, and I rented bikes in the city and headed out toward the Mediterranean. The object of the excursion - other than to just have a wonderful day riding - was to visit the cathédrale on the not-quite-island of Maguelone, a mere 10km from the city. It was an adventure of a day, with heavily-detoured, under-construction bike paths that gave us something more like a 15km trek. But we were happy. And we worked up a good appetite for lunch.

The cathedral dates from the 1100s and 1200s, but was constructed on the site of a 6th century church. There are remains from this structure incorporated into the cathedral.

We ended the day sitting on a sparsely populated beach, enjoying the sun, relaxing... and redoubling our strength so we could get back to town!
