Another Expat Thanksgiving

This marks my fifth Thanksgiving celebrated in France. It's always an odd day. The real Thanksgiving day being just another Thursday, with classes to attend or to teach, lessons to prepare, papers to write or to grade. It's funny to walk around thinking that pretty much all of America has stopped normal life to cook, eat and be festive (and thankful) with family and friends, and life in France continues without a single hitch.

Thanksgiving #1 in France was during my year abroad with Skidmore. It was during the transportation strikes that lasted weeks, and my friend Ruby and I spent what felt like hours on the metro trying to get to the restaurant where Skidmore was hosting dinner for us. We finally just gave up and ended up walking the last 20 minutes since the metro was just unbearable.

Thanksgiving #2 was my first year in Metz. It was also the day of the medical visit and visa stamping for all the region's teaching assistants. There were a lot of Americans and we thought it was such a strange way to spend the day. We celebrated during the weekend with a huge dinner among a mix of French and American friends.

Thanksgiving #3 was the next year in Metz. Again, we were called in for our medical visits on the same day and we started to wonder if there was something going on! I organized and hosted the expat dinner during the weekend, which was a ton of fun!

Thanksgiving #4 was back in Paris. And somehow, yet again, a medical visit. Now I was really suspicious! I celebrated the same night with the Skidmore crew, in a restaurant overlooking Notre-Dame. It was excellent.

And #5 was another gathering of expat friends. All Americans this time, and mostly Middlebury grads. (And no medical visit!) We talked about being thankful for still being in France, for the good and the bad and the frustrating. And then we feasted with the best of our individual favorites: squash soup, veggie casseroles, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce, Brussels sprouts, salad and a delicious chicken (we do what we can!).
